LEEDS & DISTRICT UNION of GOLF CLUBS
Ben Firth (Moortown) won the Leeds Amateur Championship at Pontefract in an enthralling final against Tom Broxup (Cookridge Hall). Ben was two under after 5 holes but found himself two down against Tom - the LDUGC Golfer of the Year. Ben fought back and it was all square after the first 18 holes. In the afternoon Tom suffered from bad luck when his ball finished in a hole from a missing stake to a tree. Ben piled on the pressure, his short game was immaculate, and by the turn he was 3 up. A wayward drive by Tom on the 10th resulted in Ben going going 4 up. Ben increased his lead and was 5 up with 5 to play. Ben hit a superb tee shot on the par 3 14th and Tom's tee shot found the greenside bunker. Tom needed to hole the bunker shot to keep the game alive but could not quite manage it and so Ben won his first Leeds Amateur Championship.
