Leeds Amateur Champion

Lewis Clarke (Low Laithes) defeated Jamie Perkins (Wetherby) 3 and 2 in the 36 hole final of the Leeds Amateur Matchplay to win the Grantham Eley Trophy at Cookridge Hall Golf Club.

In the morning round Clarke stormed into a 4 shot lead after 9 holes as a result of Perkins bogeying 7,8 and 9. Lewis played par golf on the back 9 to increase his lead to 6 holes at the end of the morning session.

However, Perkins, with the sun on his back played some fantastic golf in the afternoon, reducing the deficit to one hole after the front 9. The back 9 was nip and tuck, Perkins birdying the 14th to reduce the deficit yet again to 1 hole. Clarke responded with a birdie on the 16th to move ahead by 2 holes before cementing his 3 and 2 victory with a par on the 16th.

Both players can be proud of their performances and Lewis Clarke ended his amateur career (he turns professional on 29th September) with the coveted Grantham Eley Trophy.
