Horsforth Junior Open
Horsforth hosted the final event in The Copier Company Junior Order of Merit. The course was in excellent condition and the weather was distinctly autumnal. 28 competitors took part and in true golfing fashion the joint leaders of the 2017 Order of Merit Jamie Dunion (Moortown) and Nathan Ali (Cookridge Hall) were in the final group to tee off.
Jamie started his round superbly, birdieing 4 of the first 6 holes by which time he was two strokes ahead of Nathan. However a bogey on the 8th and a double bogey on the 9th meant that Jamie reached the turn in 34 whereas Nathan played par golf to reach the turn in 33. The par 4th 14th hole proved pivotal, Nathan birdied it whereas Jamie had a triple bogey. Both players then played well over the last few holes with Nathan finishing on 73 to Jamie's 75. Nathan won The Copier Company NIKE driver for the best gross.
In the nett competition, Amaan Iqbal (Wike Ridge) shot a superb 66 to gain 100 OOM merit points from club mate Maclain Simpson who scored 69.
So, after 12 rounds of golf that started at Pontefact on 30 May the leaderboard for the prized Copier Company Golf bags and Claret Jugs could not be closer.
Nathan's 100 points on the day from Jamie's 85 points secured the Gross Order of Merit Golf Bag for Nathan with 470 points overall to Jamie's 455.
However, Jamie's consistent golf over the summer was not to be in vain as he accumulated 417 points in the nett competition with Nathan in second place on 405 points. Jamies duly won the Nett Order of Merit.
All in all 94 Juniors from the Union's affilliated clubs took part in the Order of Merit events during the season.
