Leeds Amateur Championship 2017

Moor Allerton player, Ben Sardo, beat Simon Coumbe of Pontefract 2&1 in this years Amateur Matchplay Final at Sand Moor. Despite only returning from holiday in the early hours of Sunday morning Ben got off to a flying start in the first round of the 36 hole Championship Final winning the first three holes against Simon, who had already put in a shift at Pontefract where he is currently employed on the green keeping staff before coming to Sand Moor.

Neither player was on their best form and holes changed hands through the round but Ben managed to finish with a two hole lead after losing the 18th hole. The lunch break gave both players a chance to re charge their batteries and Simon had the better start but missed a short putt on the 3rd hole which would have evened the match. However both players produced better golf in the afternoon but Simon could not manage to close the gap and Ben was dormy three up playing the sixteenth hole.  He gave Simon a glimmer of hope by inadvertently playing Simon's ball and conceding the hole.

The seventeenth hole was playing into a slight breeze but Simon produced a great shot to the front of the green whilst Ben missed the putting surface to the right side of the green leaving himself a difficult chip to the pin. His chip finished 10/12 feet past the hole but Simon raced his putt 6/8 ft past  himself. When Ben missed his putt the prospect of the match going to the 36th hole loomed large.

Sadly Simons putter let him down again and Ben shook hands having won 2&1 and became Leeds Amateur Champion for the first time.
