New Leeds & District Junior Match Play Champion.

President Geoff Mortimer presents Isaac Smith (Moortown) with the Presidents Cup as winner of the Leeds & District Junior Match Play Championship 2020.

Once again we had a very exciting final between Nathan Ali (Cookridge Hall) a past winner in 2017 and winner of the Junior Order of Merit Best Gross in three of the past four years and Isaac Smith (Moortown) seeking his first Junior Trophy.

On a very wet and windy afternoon from the white tees both boys produced excellent scores over the front nine holes with Nathan being only one over par against Isaac's score of three over par to turn 2 up.

Isaac reduced the deficit to one hole by making a birdie on the 10th hole only to lose the 13th with a bogey then produced another birdie on the 14th and won the 15th when Nathan three putted for the first time.

Whilst both players missed the 16th green in two strokes Nathan made par to win the hole when Isaac three putted. It seemed odds on that Nathan would take the title when he found the green on the short 17th hole with Isaac missing to the right side.,not to be however, when Isaac chipped to 12ft and Nathan left his putt 4ft short. Having marked his ball Nathan moved away for Isaac to try and hole a crucial putt but Nathan inadvertently dropped his ball and made a practice putt on the green and had no option but to concede the hole and proceed to the 18th tee all square.

The difficult and long 18th was halved in par and we moved to a sudden death play-off on the 19th hole. Both players hit two great shots to be beside the 488yd par 5 hole. Nathan unfortunately caught his ball thin from a bunker to fly the green into a ditch at the rear and had to take a penalty stroke before chipping to the flag to have a putt for a bogey 6. Isaac showing maturity beyond his age chipped  and putted to the hole side when Nathan conceded the match.

Isaac was our new Champion and will be a welcome addition to the Leeds Junior Team just as Nathan moves on to Senior golf after a great Junior career with many victories both individually and for his teams. Congratulations to them both.
