Leeds Amateur Final 2023
Leeds Union team mates Sam Claypole (Darrington) and Saul Guilford (Moor Allerton) meet at Horsforth Golf Club in the Leeds Amateur Championship after competing against the best players in Leeds to reach the KO final. Both players have had outstanding seasons and were well matched in ability.
Those who came to support the players were treated to a terrific match with both players being 3 under par after 9 holes and all square. The quality of shot making was very impressive by both players. Sam had a bogey at the 11th to go 1 down but bounced straight back with another birdie on the 12th to level the match. The 13th and 14th were halved with par scores but Saul took the lead when Sam made a bogey on the short 15th with a rare 3 putt. Saul took a 2 up lead after a birdie on the long 16th hole. Par scores on the last two holes with a bogey by Sam on 18th left Saul with a 3 hole lead after the first round.
Saul was 5 under par after 18 holes and Sam 3 under par with all to play for.
In the afternoon both players had to take penalty drops to halve the hole in 5 strokes then Saul pulled his tee shot out of bounds to lose the 2nd, then made bogey at the 4th and lost the 5th and 6th as Sam had made back to back birdies and was now 1 up in the match.
They halved the the 7th and 8th but Saul recovered winning the 9th with a par 3 to level the match then birdied the 10th to retake the lead -1 up. This did not last long as Sam won the 12th and 13th with pars and birdied the 14 to be 2 up. Two more par scores on 15th and 16th brought the match to an end with Sam winning 4/2 to take the title and the Grantham Eley Trophy. Points gained as champion meant that Sam just beat Saul to become the Golfer of the Year and received the The Tony Jackson Trophy from President Simon Lax after the match.
