LEEDS & DISTRICT UNION of GOLF CLUBS

Amateur Champion 2018

Barry Harcastle (Wike Ridge) a seasoned campaigner and member of the Union team, having played his first match in 2003, played Oscar Land (Moor Allerton) the youngest ever finalist and a member of the Union Junior team in the Amateur Final at Howley Hall on Sunday.

After sharing the first two holes in par Barry took a one hole lead on the 3rd following a bogey by Oscar.  After halving the 4th in par Oscar conceding the 5th to go 2 down. The 6th was halved with birdies by both players but Oscar also birdied the 7th and Barry conceded the 9th after a wayward drive to turn all square.

Unfortunately Oscar had developed a shank which caused him problems for the rest of the day and whilst in between he played some excellent shots but Barry is an experienced and very steady player and had a 2 hole lead after the 14th but Oscar dug in and leveled the score by the 16th only to lose the last 2 holes to finish 2 down after the first round.

The deficit was reduced to 1 hole after the 2nd in the afternoon but after conceding the 4th and 5th holes after wayward shots Barry had a 3 hole lead and despite another birdie on the difficult 7th hole by Oscar to recover to 2 down. After conceding the 11th 12th and 14th holes Barry took the title with a 5 and 4 victory.

Barry deserved his win as he has been the most consistent player in the Union this year and secured the Player of the Year 2018 with this victory. Despite the swing problem which Oscar experienced there was enough quality shown in his very mature approach to the game to realise he is a fine prospect for the future.

Congratulations to both players for the spirit and sportsmanship shown during the day.

The President presented the trophy to Barry.
